The Eastern Allgäu
Where castles grow on mountains –
The holiday region Eastern Allgäu
East Allgäu is situated where Bavaria is most beautiful: In-between the Ammer and Thannheimer mountains in the south and the undulating alpine upland in the north.
Already than, the Bavarian kings were so taken by the magical spell and the beauty of this swath of land at the foot of the mountains, that they took up residence in the area: crown prince Maximilian, the later King Max II, refurbished the ruins of Hohenschwangau castle into his holiday domicile. His son, Bavaria’s fairy-tale king Ludwig II, made a keen dream come true, only a stone`s throw away: Since then, the castle of Neuschwanstein is the distinctive landmark of a veritable royal holiday region. The East Allgäu is an ideal region for active vacation in any season. An experience of a special kind is the “hiking spring”, that will take place again in 2010 in corporation with the local native country association Allgäu.
